Interwoven
The ‘Interwoven’ project
The project started at the end of 2023 when our education team thought about ways to integrate mātauranga Māori in our education programme.
Thanks to a local weaver, Enger, a design was created for a harakeke plant guard that could be used to protect the native plants we put in the ground with the community.
The goals of Interwoven are to:
- establish harakeke / flax as a sustainable and biodegradable material for plant guards used by Te Kākano and other providers of regenerative plantings on public land.
- authentically connect with tangata whenua, and honour the wealth mātauranga Māori offers for our future in Aotearoa New Zealand
- educate and empower communities, especially young people, to source sustainable alternatives to plastic.

Programmes for All Ages
‘Interwoven’ engages learners of all ages. We love working with ECE centres, schools, homeschool groups and holiday programmes to connect our young people with their local environment. This programme is designed and facilitated by trained and experienced educators who understand what works for different age groups.
